CACVT’s Live KNS: Clinical Preparedness for Psychedelic Substance Exposure in Animals

In 2022, Colorado passed policy allowing at-home cultivation and use of psilocybin-containing mushrooms, and created facilitated therapeutic access to psychedelic substances. Like cannabis before it, increased human access means increased animal exposure risk — in homes, in therapeutic settings, and along cultivation and manufacturing routes.

Nationally, hallucinogenic mushroom exposures to ASPCA Poison Control increased 74% in 2023 and continue to rise — and cases are already presenting in Colorado clinics.

This session provides an overview of the policy context, at-risk animal populations, clinical signs of exposure, available response tools, and guidance for the post-exposure critical period.

Meet The Speaker

Casara Andre DVM, cVMA

Founder & Director | VeterinaryPsy, Psychedelic Substances in Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Casara Andre is a practicing Colorado veterinarian specializing in trauma-responsive care, interspecies medicine, and novel emerging medicines.

A medical problem solver and committed healer, she is the Founder and Director of VeterinaryPsy, an organization developing harm reduction education and clinical response resources for animal care professionals navigating the emerging psychedelic ecosystem.

A U.S. Army Veterinary Corps veteran, her clinical work includes working animal care and support for the canine veteran.

 

Dr. Andre is also the Founder of Veterinary Cannabis, Cultivate Wellbeing, the Colorado School of Animal Massage, and The Preparedness Collective, and serves as President of Care for the Healer and a board member of DarkSky Colorado.
