Every two years, CACVT-credentialed veterinary technicians must renew their CACVT credential and meet continuing education (CE) requirements to maintain active RVT registration with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). Below are answers to common questions about renewal deadlines, reinstatement options, required CE, and what to expect during the review process.

Yes – CACVT credentialing and DORA registration are separate requirements, and maintaining an active CACVT credential is required to maintain active RVT registration in Colorado.
No – Membership with CACVT’s professional association is optional and is separate from credentialing and renewal.

Both renew on two-year cycles of even years.
CACVT credential renewal is due by June 30 of even-numbered years. You can check your CACVT credential expiration date by logging into your CACVT.org account and viewing your profile.
DORA registration renewal is due by October 31 of even-numbered years. DORA will contact registrants with renewal instructions when their renewal process opens.
Renewal applications typically open in May of the even year and are open through the June 30th deadline.
CACVT does not offer renewal extensions. If you miss the June 30 deadline, you may be eligible to apply for late renewal with additional fees based on the date you submit.
If your credential is current (not expired), you will apply for renewal.
If your credential is expired, you may need to apply for reinstatement or another pathway depending on how long it has been expired.
CACVT credential reinstatement will required the submission of any previously owed CE, credentialing fees, and late fees. You can find out more about eligibility and requirements on our Credential Reinstatement page.
Yes. Employers can use CACVT’s group prepayment process to pay for multiple credential renewals at once. Full instructions and the request form are available on our Group Prepayment for CACVT Credential Renewal page.
Employers may use CACVT’s group prepayment process to cover renewal fees for multiple employees. After group payment is processed, the employer will provide eligible employees with a clinic-specific discount code to use when submitting their individual renewal applications.
Employees are still responsible for completing their own renewal application, including required CE submission, and must verify that the discount is applied correctly before submitting payment.
If membership is not included by your employer, you may add membership during renewal and pay the difference at checkout.
Details and instructions for employers are available on the Group Prepayment for CACVT Credential Renewal page.
Your CE requirements are based on your renewal cycle. You can reference your CACVT Credential Approval email if you were recently credentialed, and you can also review past CACVT emails in your CACVT.org account by going to Access my Profile → Email History in your User Portal
Use the CACVT CE Guidelines and CE FAQ pages for what qualifies, category requirements, and logging instructions.
Uploading certificates is not always required at the time of entry, but keeping complete documentation helps prevent delays—especially if your renewal is selected for audit or if a course requires clarification. See the CE FAQ for documentation expectations.
Review timelines vary based on volume and whether additional documentation is needed.
During peak renewal periods, allow additional time for review, up to 6 weeks.
To support timely processing, submit complete CE entries with clear details and documentation when available.
No. If you hold an active PVT but have not yet completed CACVT credentialing, you do not have a CACVT credential to renew. DORA will provide renewal information for your PVT as their renewal process opens.
Yes – If you hold RVT registration in Colorado, maintaining an active CACVT credential is required to maintain that registration.
Your pathway to obtain CACVT credentialing depends on your circumstances (for example, endorsement/transfer or other options).
For the correct pathway, refer to the Credentialing FAQ or contact information@cacvt.org.
Whether you maintain DORA registration depends on your professional needs. However, in Colorado you may not use or be represented with protected veterinary technician titles (including VT/RVT/VTS) unless you are registered with DORA.
No – You may renew your CACVT credential even if you do not currently hold DORA registration. If you later choose to register with DORA, you must meet DORA’s requirements at that time. Remember: you may not use or be represented with protected veterinary technician titles in Colorado unless you are registered with DORA.
Your credential certificate is accessed through your CACVT account.
Log in to CACVT.org and use your User Portal to locate the Download Credential Certificate button. This will take you to a step-by-step guide for the process.
You can access emails, invoices, forms, and account settings by logging into your CACVT.org account and navigating to Access My Profile.
In Email History, you can open previously sent messages, and in your account history you can locate invoices and payment records.
