Dear CACVT Members,
I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone for their excitement, feedback, and patience as we implemented the new website and member portal! While we were busy with that project, we also saw the opening of the 2025 Legislative Session. CACVT is involved in several legislative activities already, including our very own Leslie Neidermyer, Past President, testifying in support of HB25-1034 Changes to Dangerous Dog Statute. With the support of Leslie and other veterinary professionals, this bill has passed both chambers and is awaiting the Governor’s signature! To stay up-to-date with bills we are following, check out the Advocacy Center.
I would also personally like to invite you to Spring Conference 2025 at the Embassy Suites in Loveland. Spring Conference is my favorite time to connect with veterinary technicians from all over Colorado and learn about the issues that are affecting their careers. I will even be hosting a lunch session dedicated to the enhanced vet tech scope of practice that is now incorporated into the Veterinary Practice Act. We opened the conversation last Spring Conference, and now we can continue! Don’t worry if you weren’t there, this is a sequel that will still make sense if you didn’t see the first part ;). The lecture lineup is top-notch, with a variety of topics and hands-on learning opportunities geared towards enhancing your clinical skill set. Colorado’s own Animal EMT group will be hosting a BLS/ALS RECOVER rescuer certification workshop, which is already attracting veterinary professionals from across the country. As a CACVT member, you receive discounted registration AND this year’s t-shirt just for being part of this great organization. You can even submit a t-shirt design for a chance to earn an all-inclusive conference experience and bragging rights! Don’t delay, as design submissions close February 23rd.

PVT Titling Update from CO State Board of Veterinary Medicine
Questions have been floating around for quite some time about PVT titling, and we now have clarification. During its bi-monthly meeting on Thursday, February 13th, the State Board of Veterinary Medicine made a declaration that it is a title protection violation for individuals holding a PVT (provisional veterinary technician) registration to represent themselves or be presented as either a registered veterinary technician (RVT) or veterinary technician (VT). The restriction on titling PVTs includes websites, name tags, social media, or any other instance in which the public may be inclined to believe the PVT is an RVT based on improper titling.
HPAI Infections in Domestic Cats
The Colorado Department of Ag and Department of Public Health and Environment recently shared an update on avian influenza infections in Colorado cats.
Fourteen cases of HPAI have been diagnosed in Colorado since May 2024, with 10 being domestic cats and 4 in exotic big cats.
Two of the domestic cats were indoor only cats exposed to raw poultry meat. Unfortunately, only one of the 10 domestic cats survived.
CDPHE has developed a Guidance for Veterinarians document, which can be found HERE. Veterinary professionals can contact CDPHE for consultation at the number listed in the guidance document. As a reminder, HPAI is a reportable disease in all species and must be reported at the time of suspicion. Visit the State Veterinarian’s Reportable Disease webpage for instructions.
