Join us for an insightful session on Fair Unbiased Reporting (FUR)—a philosophy and process that empowers individuals to report situations that do not go as planned so leaders can address issues in a timely manner and avoid escalation of unwanted outcomes. Every institution must acknowledge that humans are fallible and inevitably make mistakes with unpredictable degrees of severity regardless of how high the stakes are.

The first step in implementing FUR is encouraging teams to openly discuss unwanted outcomes or near misses, while establishing psychological safety. The second step is to approach reports and incidents fairly and unbiasedly. Teams must acknowledge and avoid common cognitive biases, such as outcome bias or just- world bias, to avoid unfair assessment of intent and motives. In conclusion, the FUR philosophy and process will create a workplace culture that is empathetic, fair, and unbiased, allowing teams to focus on gaps in their systems and process improvement rather than individual blame.

Meet the Speaker:

Stephanie Winters, RVT, VTS (ECC)

Stephanie Winters has served as the Director of Veterinary Operations at the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance (DZCA) since 2021, bringing over two decades of experience in emergency and critical care. A Registered Veterinary Technician since 2003, she earned her Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) in Emergency and Critical Care in 2010. Her background includes managing critical care anesthesia and advanced monitoring in small animal emergency settings, which she now applies to zoo medicine—training the veterinary technician team in complex techniques like direct blood pressure monitoring in exotic species. At DZCA, Stephanie leads with a strong focus on collaboration and process improvement. She spearheaded the development and implementation of the Fair Unbiased Reporting (FUR) program, which fosters a culture of transparency, problem-solving, and continuous learning across teams. Outside the clinical and educational arenas, Stephanie runs a pasture-raised poultry farm and is passionate about regenerative agriculture. In her free time, she enjoys immersing herself in horror films and books, hiking Colorado’s trails, and paddleboarding on mountain lakes.
